Grade 6 - Internal Systems

- Reviews
Students will be introduced to the four body systems: excretory, reproductive, hormonal, and
nervous.
Students learn how each system works, its function in the body and the way they interconnect.
The excretory system is important for removing waste from the body. An experiment with a
coffee filter models how the kidneys filter the blood. The lungs remove unwanted gasses such
as carbon dioxide and the skin plays a part in removing water and salts.
The reproduction system is important for the survival of all species. It produces the gametes
which lead to the development of an embryo, fetus and offspring. The functions of the parts of
the male and female anatomy are described. Differences between sexual and asexual
reproduction are explained.
The endocrine or hormonal system regulates processes in the body using hormones. The
hormones act in the cells to help your body function.
The nervous system relays messages from your brain to other parts of the body. Neurons make
connections that affect the way you think, learn, move, and behave. The brain is the centre of
the nervous system and different parts of the brain have different functions.
Plants and animals have body systems similar to humans with some differences. Indigenous
people used plants to help with the different systems.
