Welcome

Welcome to our interactive learning journey! Here, we bridge the gap between the classroom and the natural world through a blend of engaging, curriculum-aligned programs. Our e-learning modules, enriched with Indigenous perspectives, offer students from K-7 a unique opportunity to explore and understand the intricacies of nature through diverse, interactive courses. Join us as we delve into the wonders of ecosystems, body systems, the principles of natural selection, and more, all designed to inspire and educate the young minds of today.

Nature in the Classroom

Allan Brooks Nature Centre offers visits to your classroom from November through April. These programs have been designed to suit each grade level from pre-k to grade 7, are curriculum based and focus on the ecosystems and wildlife of the North Okanagan. Each consists of a presentation, an opportunity for students to see wildlife furs and bones, and participate in an activity (time allowing). The Pre-K and K-1 programs run approximately 45 minutes while programs for older students run 60 minutes.

BC School's K-12 Core Competencies

The ABNC E-Learning program addresses the Core Competencies and their sub-competencies.
Below are a few examples of how these might be covered.

Communication

  • Communicating – students are asked to compare observations, share information
  • Collaborating – projects provide an opportunity to work together

Thinking

  • Creative – students are prompted to come up with solutions to problems (i.e. environmental)
  • Critical and Reflective – throughout the lessons students are prompted to reflect on their
    learning; students question and predict

Personal and Social

  • Personal Awareness and Responsibility – concern for the local environment is an important
    issue
  • Positive Personal and Cultural Identity – Identifying needs and how they contribute to the
    family, community, and society

“The Core Competencies are sets of intellectual, personal, and social and emotional proficiencies that all students need in order to engage in deep, lifelong learning. Along with literacy and numeracy foundations, they are central to British Columbia’s K-12 curriculum and assessment system and directly support students in their growth as educated citizens.”

Interactive Lesson Sample

When students participate in interactive learning, they engage multiple senses at once. They aren’t just reading or listening; they are also watching, participating, experiencing and engaging. This level of engagement uses multiple parts of their growing brains and makes it easier for them to retain information.
